Eric Skye podcast on Fretboard Journal
Our beloved Eric Skye did this week’s podcast with the folks at Fretboard Journal. Click the image below to hear it!
Portland, Oregon’s Eric Skye may be too humble to consider himself a great guitarist, but anyone who has heard this wonderful improviser in action would beg to differ. On this week’s podcast, we talk to Skye about his early years playing music (including the job he held cleaning fish tanks so that he could pay for guitar lessons) and the music that inspires him today. We also hear about his new Santa Cruz signature model 00-sized guitar, which features many subtle refinements over the classic Martin design. All-told, it’s a great 30 minute interview with one of the Pacific Northwest’s best acoustic talents.

We Have a Winner!! Drum Roll Please…
… and the little lady’s name is… CLEMENTINE!
We can’t thank you all enough for your entries and thoughtful names. We are guitar builders, and this was a whole new experience for us. Choosing a name was difficult! In the end, the luthiers agreed that Clementine was the most fitting name for the cowgirl on the peghead of our 35th Anniversary guitars. Who named her, you ask? Why Jeff! Of Missouri! In the next week we will post Jeff’s reaction to the guitar and what it was like to hear from Richard… so please check back soon! In the meantime, you can witness, first hand, the telephone call below:
Stay tuned, we will be posting more photos and videos from our 35th Anniversary concert in the next few weeks. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, and for those who couldn’t make it, we appreciate your good wishes more than you know. It has been nothing but a pleasure to build guitars for you all for the last 35 years!

Odie Blackmon & his Santa Cruz FireFly
Here’s a photo of session guitarist Odie Blackmon and his Santa Cruz FireFly, participating in the ‘AMC Lifting Lives‘ Camp in Nashville, providing musical education and inspiration for children with developmental disabilities. Odie was joined by other top Nashville names, including Winona Judd, Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker and Little Big Town. Odie was nice enough to offer his testimonial on the FireFly: “I love my firefly because it’s so easy to take with me everywhere to write songs but the BIG reason that it’s my main axe is that I have overuse syndrome and range of motion/muscle pain. The Firefly’s short scale allows me to play chords that would hurt on a normal scale and the small body doesn’t jack my shoulder up like a dreadnought does. Also, I don’t feel I sacrifice sound or tuning like I would have on most small guitars. I just wanted you guys to know that because it really helps me to work everyday without pain.” Thank you Odie!

Santa Cruz Guitar featured in San Jose Mercury News
Santa Cruz artisan transforms vintage wood into treasured guitars
The philosophical riddle is posed so often it has grown mossy with cliché: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? It turns out the answer is yes, it makes an amazing sound, although the eruption of this joyful noise may not occur for centuries, when it is sliced into pear-shaped tones at the Santa Cruz Guitar Company.
Just as Michelangelo — a Renaissance master with whom Santa Cruz Guitar guru Richard Hoover likely feels an artistic affinity — believed every block of stone had a statue hidden inside, craftsmen in the Cruz who make artisanal acoustic guitars crave fallen timber for its distinctive timbre. A thin membrane of California sycamore produces small sonic detonations as he taps along its surface.
“Flavors, colors on an artist’s palette, that’s what we’re creating,” says Hoover, whose groundbreaking guitar company is preparing to observe its 35th anniversary.
By harvesting rare rosewood from Brazilian forests cut down in the 1920s, and 100-year-old mahogany planted for Britain’s Royal Navy — a reverberating echo of empire — Hoover has indulged the “scientific romance” of a boutique guitar-making movement that he himself carved out.

New OO-Skye Ad
Here is our new OO-Skye ad featuring our good friend and SCGC ambassador Eric Skye! You can see it in print in the current Acoustic Guitar issue. Jazz fingerstylist and improvisation artist Eric Skye is a household name on the Portland music scene, and is gaining a fantastic international following thanks to his moving performances available for viewing on youtube. The OO-Skye model has been getting a great deal of attention ever since its debut at NAMM this past January. If you have yet to see it in action, check out this great video below, shot by Richard Newman, which demos the guitar and takes you through the build process. If you’d like to play one yourself, contact a dealer near you or feel free to call the shop to ask for a referral.

All Hail the OO-Skye!
We wanted to share this great video with you, a collaboration between jazz fingerstylist Eric Skye and videographer Richard Newman. Eric spends time playing and talking about his new Santa Cruz Guitar Company signature model, the OO-Skye with photos and footage from the build process:
Plus we just got this great testimonial in for OO-Skye #3 from our friend Matt Richter of the website Gear for Guitars (www.gearforguitars.com):
“I received my new Santa Cruz 00 Eric Skye Signature guitar in March. My first impression was WOW. I have never opened a case for the first time and been struck so profoundly by the sheer elegance, simplicity, and beauty of guitar. It was love at first sight. I then played an E Maj that resonated throughout the house. The tones were both complex and articulate. The sustain of the notes was insane (in a great way). I didn’t put it down for several hours. Now, months later, that first impression hasn’t changed. I am fortunate enough to have several wonderful guitars. This is my favorite. Well, I will never do it the kind of justice Eric Skye does, the cool thing is that with this guitar, I feel inspired to play and hear my own music as much more musical. Thanks for making it for me. Thanks for designing it with Eric. And, thanks for making the whole build process a fantastic experience. SCGC has single-handedly cured GAS– at least for flattops. Although the FS looks pretty darn interesting…”

Eric Skye/Richard Hoover Workshop at Gryphon this Saturday
Saturday, May 7th @ Gryphon Stringed Instruments
Improvisation Mastery for Guitar with Eric Skye, with special guest Richard Hoover
“Pacific Northwest acoustic jazz guitarist Eric Skye will conduct a workshop on using jazz concepts for improvisation for jazz and blues, as well as other styles of music. While Eric clearly has one foot in the classic jazz guitar world, the other is in acoustic roots music such as blues, bluegrass, and contemporary fingerstyle. Special emphasis will be placed on acoustic tone production, left and right hand technique, listening, and playing in time. Eric will deconstruct a few standard tunes and talk about how he approaches them from both the perspective of an improviser and as an arranger, both fingerstyle and flatpicking.
Eric will be joined by very special guest Richard Hoover, Santa Cruz Guitar Company’s international award winning guitar maker and designer. Richard will talk about the new Eric Skye signature model guitar, as well as guitar building in general. Bringing samples of master grade tone woods and professionally voiced guitar tops that will be available to demonstrate their contributions to instruments. Richard is a living legend of guitar building with gems of information for the player, novice maker, or accomplished luthier.” – www.gryphonstrings.com

MerleFest and Cowboy Festival this weekend!
One weekend, two great festivals!
Thursday, April 28th – Sunday May 1st: MerleFest
On the campus of Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro, NC www.merlefest.org
Friday, April 29th – Sunday May 1st: Cowboy Festival
On Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, CA www.cowboyfestival.org
This weekend brings the start of May and two excellent music festivals on opposite ends of the country. What do Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Bill Nershi and James Nash have in common? They all play Santa Cruz Guitars, and they are all playing this weekend at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC. We will have a booth there in the Expo tent, so if you’re attending this world famous festival, be sure to stop by to try out some Santa Cruz Guitars and place a bid on our donated Flamed Maple F Model that we donated to the Merlefest Silent Auction.
If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area this weekend, do yourself a favor and make the trip up to Santa Clarita to partake in the ultimate gathering of cowboy music, poetry and lore. The Cowboy Festival takes place on Gene Autry’s famed Melody Ranch, and is a whole weekend of tall tales, ten gallon hats and tumbling tumbleweeds. Don Edwards will be performing on his new 50th Anniversary Commemorative Signature Model, and Santa Cruz Guitar Company will have a booth set up on Main Street to show off his guitar and other Santa Cruz models great for western picking and campfire songs.
Hope to see some of you at either festival!

We recently had the pleasure of making a custom OM cutaway for guitar phenomenon Gretchen Menn. Gretchen is a rare breed, a classically trained acoustic player and bad ass electric guitar shredder. Which is why it makes perfect sense that in addition to her original solo project and duo project with Jude Gold, Lap Dance Armageddon, she fronts Zepparella, the all female tribute to Led Zeppelin, doing incredible justice to Jimmy Page. For her acoustic, Gretchen was very specific about the playability she needed on her custom Santa Cruz. She was kind enough to write up her experience for us below:
“My custom Santa Cruz OM is quite simply a phenomenal instrument—a work of art on all levels, and the kind of guitar that inspires me to become worthy of it. SCGC involved me throughout the process of building the guitar, always double-checking to make sure they got it right. And they got it right beyond what I could have expected. Most importantly, the instrument sounds amazing. The tone and resonance are gorgeous. Additionally, the custom carved neck is a home run—it plays and feels the way I had hoped. And the custom finish, a deep red, is stunning.
I had heard about Santa Cruz Guitars for years, but they hit my radar profoundly when I began a serious search for a great instrument for my acoustic duo, Lapdance Armageddon. We had just played a few great shows, opening a show for Adrian Belew and two shows for Steve Morse Band, and I was overdue to find my permanent steel string. I took a spontaneous poll of my musician friends, and received dozens of eager responses and strong opinions. It was indicative, given how many people responded, that a few companies kept coming up. The one that was at the top of the list of virtually all of my most trusted musical advisors was Santa Cruz Guitar Company. I called my bandmate and guitar mentor, Jude Gold, who confirmed the rave reviews and put me in touch with Richard Hoover. So I made a trip to Santa Cruz to visit.
Richard Hoover showed me around the factory, explaining everything from how they source and select woods, to various options for bracing and custom neck carving. His enthusiasm was infectious, and the people I met there were quick to explain their role in the process, and seemed genuinely connected with music and the art of building great instruments. Most of them were guitar players, themselves. I had the sense that the current incarnation of SCGC was an organic outgrowth of Richard Hoover’s garage, expanded and upgraded over the years. It seemed small and very intimate, yet also very carefully dialed in. I loved that people there knew exactly which guitars were being produced at that time, as well as remembered little details of past instruments they had built.
It’s really a wonderful thing to be able to work with a company that I love on all levels. The people there are fun, positive, and seemingly easy-going, yet clearly serious about what they do and deeply committed to quality. Though perhaps nebulous, it seems that anything built with focus and a love for the process will exhibit an attention to detail that contributes to significantly greater quality.
And so it is with SCGC.” – Gretchen Menn
